McGeagh, Robert
Long-time New Mexico resident and University Professor, Dr. Robert McGeagh, known affectionately as “Bob,” passed away on November 24th in Rio Rancho, at the age of 83. Family and friends knew him to be a pioneering rule-breaker, always up for adventure. He was an optimistic and generous spirit, who touched many people’s lives with warmth and understanding, wherever he went and in whatever projects he worked.
Born in Belfast, Ireland, Bob immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. He completed his undergraduate coursework in Philosophy and Theology before completing his Master of Arts degree in United States/Latin American History from California State University-Fullerton. He then completed his Ph.D. degree in Latin American History at the University of New Mexico. Bob traveled to South America as a Fulbright Scholar (Uruguay 1981; Argentina 1988). He produced various research publications and articles in both Spanish and English. Most recently he authored two publications on New Mexico History: Juan De Oñate's Colony in the Wilderness, and Emilio - A People's Politician.
Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Josephine (McWilliams) McGeagh and his 4 siblings: Laura Murphy, Jim McGeagh, Betty Stonehouse, and Gerry McGeagh. Survived by the mother of his children, María Cortez; as well as daughter, Maureen Curtis, son-in-law, Tom Curtis; daughter, Christine Ancalmo, son-in-law, Mauricio Ancalmo; granddaughters, Erin and Lauren Curtis.
