Wellborn, Robert P. 
Robert Patterson Wellborn (Bob) was born in Snyder, TX on July 1, 1935 to Robert Henry Wellborn and Lorena (Patterson ) Wellborn.  He passed away on the family ranch in Quemado, NM on September 25, 2018. He is survived by his spouse of 57 years Sherry (Burnett) Wellborn,  daughter Mary Beth Atwood of Roswell, sons Robert Lake Wellborn and wife, Kari of Duncan, AZ, Clint Wellborn and wife, Jan of Socorro, NM,  Jeff Wellborn and wife Carmen of Gallup, NM, siblings Dick Wellborn of Datil, NM, JoAnne Washburn of Capitan, NM, Mary Nell Washburn of Columbus, NM, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grand children.  Bob joined the New Mexico Game and Fish as a conservation officer where he worked from 1964 to 1969. He joined the New Mexico State Police in 1969 and graduated valedictorian from recruit school.   He won the Silver Grip award for recovering the most stolen cars in the state in 1970 and again in 1971.  He was named New Mexico State Police Officer of the year in 1979, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1983.   Bob retired in 1992 after 23 years with the State Police, the day after retiring he filed as a candidate for Catron County Sheriff and was elected Sheriff in 1992 and was re-elected in 1994.  He won awards as Sheriff  from the Quemado Fire Department in 1994 and the US Forest Service in 1997 recognizing his assistance to those agencies .  He retired to the ranch in 1998 after 34 years of service as a law enforcement officer.  In 1981 he was awarded Outstanding Conservation Rancher by the Quemado Soil and Water Conservation District for his conservation efforts.  On the ranch he worked daily with his wife Sherry caring for the cattle and checking waters up until his death.  Services will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, 10:00 am, at the Quemado High School Gym, Quemado, NM.  Rev. Ira Shelton officiating.  Interment to follow at the Quemado Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Brian Atwood, Ky Atwood, Waylon Wellborn, Clinton Wellborn, Ayden Wellborn and Walter Didyoung.  To view information or leave a condolence, please visit www.danielsfuneral.com.
