Rodney W. Welty

September 2, 1940 — March 3, 2018

Rodney W. Welty passed away March 3 at his home in Albuquerque.  Born September 2, 1940 in Hobbs, New Mexico, Rod leaves the world but not the hearts and lives of his family, friends, and associates who continue to be touched by his life and generous spirit.

Rod began a long and successful career in business while studying at the University of New Mexico in 1959. That career took him around the world to Europe, South America and Asia in the footware business. Starting as a store clerk, his energy and honesty took him to high positions and increased responsibility with Woolworth Corporation and Wal-Mart, retiring in 2002 as a corporate Vice President at the Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters.  He also was a member and past President of the Footwear Retail Distributer Association.  His business took him out of the country for extended periods and he became a world traveller

After his retirement from corporate affairs, he became founder and President of Quality Homes by Turquoise, a company that built many fine homes in the northwest area of Arkansas. He returned to Albuquerque in 2012 after building his own dream home in the foothills of his beloved Sandia Mountain.

A vigorous and active lover of physical competition, Rod was a ranked senior tennis player who partnered to win competitions against younger opponents at tournaments throughout the southwest.  This love of sportsmanship and team building marked every aspect of his life and business. Finding, fostering and helping others succeed were his strengths and his generous encouragement of others to develop their own success was a great gift to people around the world.

Those who knew him will remember his quiet grace and strength.  He never failed to lend assistance and counsel to those who needed it, never taking credit but always there to lend his support.  He shared himself with others.  His strength was a gift, not a demand.

He leaves behind his beloved wife and life companion of 56 years Connie Piche Welty and his treasured daughter Rebekah, both of Albuquerque.   He was preceded in death by his parents Rebecca and R. C.  Welty of Hobbs, New Mexico.  He is survived by his brothers Randall in Hobbs and Rubert Wayne in Rogers, Arkansas, their spouses Shirley and Koenia, and their children and grandchildren.

Rod’s life was large and beautiful and touched the world and left it a better place.  Those who knew him and those who didn’t but benefited from his work will miss him deeply.  He was a gift to life.  We who remain will cherish that gift.

Only a private, family ceremony will take place.
