Age 65, went home to be with The Lord Thursday, December 15, 2016 in Socorro, NM. He was born in Juarez, Mexico on June 16, 1951 to Jesus and Elena (Gonzalez) Cortez. Roman attended Las Cruces High School in Las Cruces, NM where he met his high school sweetheart Sofie. Roman worked for the St. Genevieve's Catholic Church in Las Cruces before moving his family to Socorro, NM in 1992, where he proudly became a US citizen in 1996. He was employed with Hodges Oil until his retirement in 2008. Roman was a quiet man. He believed in hard work and dedication and passed those beliefs on to his children. He was a loving, kind, generous and devoted husband, father and grandfather and was very strong in his faith. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing pool and above all, spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents. Roman is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Sofie (Duarte) Cortez; his children, Anita Rodriguez and husband Richard, Gabriel Cortez, Sylvia Gutierrez and husband Rudy and Fernando Cortez and wife Amaris; his sister, Guadalupe Cortez; grandchildren, Cheyenne Cortez, Brenden and Dylan Mannasmith, Judah Rodriguez, Giovanni and Aveyah Gutierrez, Everett, Wyatt and Isabella Cortez.. Services will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016 at 11:00 am at New Mexico Grads Building, 310 Fisher, Socorro, NM with Pastor Randall Westfall officiating. Interment to follow at Socorro Cemetery, Socorro, NM. Pallbearers will be Fernando Cortez, Richard Rodriguez, Rudy Gutierrez, Rudy Lopez, Matthew Lopez and Jesus Acosta. Honorary Pallbearers are all of Roman's grandchildren.
