Sally Triviz Montoya age 85, passed away January 22, 2013 after a serious injury. Sally was born on June 1, 1927 in Fort Bayard, New Mexico to Alejandro and Guadalupe Triviz. She was married for 47 years to the love of her life, Mauro Montoya, Sr., who preceded her in death by 15 years, almost to the day. Sally started college at New Mexico State University, later transferring to University of New Mexico, where she was president of her sorority. She also met her husband Mauro, a World War II veteran, while there. Sally was an amazing teacher who throughout her career helped pioneer new teaching techniques such as Team Teaching. She was a strong advocate for her school kids, and was named in Whos Who Among Americas Teachers in 1990 for her work. She taught in both parochial and public schools, retiring in 1985 from Whittier Elementary School. Along with her husband Mauro, who taught at Highland High, they started a program where senior high school students from Highland would partner with Sallys fourth grade students in science and other subjects. They even had the kids participate in science fair projects. Sally, in her 28 year teaching career touched thousands of childrens lives. Up to her death, Sally would run into former students who credited her for their successes in life. While teaching, Sally was also a member of the American Business Womens Association. Sally retired in 1985 and then devoted her time to her family. To Sally, family was everything. She spoke daily to her three sisters and her three children. Once she had grandchildren they were the light of her life. And over the last year, Sally found her greatest joy in her great grandson Logan. During her life, Sally was a fighter for the causes she believed in. She was a strong supporter of womens rights and on a trip to Italy with her husband and son, when the hosts would bring Mauro Sr. and Jr. out for a parade or presentation, Sally would make sure she was also included, not letting patriarchy get in her way. She loved to travel and with her husband and children visited France, Germany, Italy, Austria, England, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Aruba, the Bahamas, St. Thomas and St. Maarten and all over the United States. She lived in Albuquerque most of her life, but lived for two years in Burbank, California with her daughter Ana. While in Burbank, Sally survived a serious medical condition which slowed her down, but never broke her daunting spirit. She returned to live in Albuquerque in September, 2012 where she lived with her son Robert and family. Sally loved going to lunch with her son Mauro Jr. nearly every day and she cherished her time with her kids, grandkids and great grandson. She was so friendly and loving and she would talk to anyone. Sally is survived by her three children, Ana Montoya Wade of Burbank, California, and her husband Eric and their two children Ricky and Dakota; Robert Montoya and his wife Dawn Malone and their three children, Bobby Montoya, MacKenzie Montoya and Marissa Blackmon and her husband Ryan and their baby Logan; and Mauro A. Montoya, Jr. and his partner Andrew Walden, all of Albuquerque. Pallbearers are Rick Miller, Alfonso Lujan, Les Swindle, Kent Salazar, Bobby Montoya and Ryan Blackmon.
