Sara Vaughan Smith

SMITH, SARA VAUGHAN Age 90, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013. She was born in Greenville, NC on January 11, 1923. She was the daughter of the late John Henry Taylor and Lillian Ringgold Taylor. She was a graduate of Elizabeth City State College in Elizabeth, NC where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree. She graduated from Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY where she received her Master's Degree in Education. Sara was an Educator for 38 years. She began her teaching career in Williamsburg, VA. She taught in Hampton, VA and in Brooklyn, NY. She started a young ladies group in Brooklyn, NY named "The Young Affiliates" which encouraged girls to attend college so they could become productive independent women. Sara loved to paint pictures of flowers and birds. She also loved playing the piano. In 1943 Sara married the late Hubert Allen Vaughan. They were married 31 years. In 1990 Sara married the late Samuel H. Smith. Sara and Samuel became members of Community Missionary Baptist Church of Rio Rancho, NM. They became members of "Friends of Many Cultures". Sara became a member of the "Eureka Matrons" which gives scholarships to students attending college. Sara is survived by her three children, Walter Allen Vaughan of Rio Rancho, NM, Cecil Craig Vaughan of Brooklyn, NY, Saundra Lee Mason of Rio Rancho, NM; four grandchildren, Gunnery Sargent Ernest L. Mason, Cherece Vaughan, Craig Vaughan, Gunnery Sargent Cavin Vaughan; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles L. Taylor and his wife Amy Taylor of Baltimore, MD, John H. Taylor and his wife Peggy Taylor of Miami, FL; one sister, Wilma Taylor Dupree of Greenville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Sara was a devoted mother, sister, and grandmother. She will truly be missed. Sara will have her final resting place in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley, NY. She will be reunited with her first love and our father Hubert A. Vaughan. The family thanks you and appreciates your kindness and thoughtfulness.
