Sarah P Bender

June 21, 1922 — August 10, 2015

Bender, Sarah P.

Sally Bender was born Sarah Elizabeth Pace in Cabarrus County, NC on June 21, 1922 to parents Robert F. and Mary Alexander Pace. She grew up in Cabarrus County and Greensboro, NC where she also attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina. One summer during WWII she was visiting Columbia, SC where she met a young flier named Jack Bender who was training at the Columbia Army Air Base. The two became engaged in August 1944 before Jack deployed overseas.

Sally and Jack married in Greensboro on December 8, 1945. They resided for a short time in Stillwater, OK where they began their family with the birth of daughter Pat. They moved back to Greensboro where they lived until the birth of son Mike coincided with Jack’s recall to active military service in 1951 during the Korean War.

The following twenty years found Sally and family packing up and moving to twelve different duty stations around the world. In addition to all the responsibilities involved with establishing then moving homes frequently and acting as both parents due to Jack’s numerous assignments away from home, Sally regularly volunteered with church or service organizations including Red Cross, American Youth Association, and Christian Women’s Club of Albuquerque.

Post-Air Force career, Sally and Jack settled in Albuquerque. They spent many happy summers with their travel trailer in the mountains of Colorado and visiting numerous friends from military days in Oklahoma and Texas. Sally also continued her lifelong enthusiastic pursuit of many different crafts describing herself, tongue firmly in cheek, as a “Happy Hooker” - that would be of rugs and tapestries.

Sally was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 68 years in August 2013. She is survived by her sister Laurie Martin of Asheboro, NC; daughter Pat Sloan of Albuquerque; son Mike Bender of Portland, OR; grandson Ryan Sloan of Albuquerque and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Sally asked that donation be made to New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation - <http://theranches.org/> .  This is a worthy organization that Jack and Sally supported for many years.
