Sgt. 1st Class James Earl Thode

Sgt. 1st Class James Earl "Jim" Thode, 45, of Kirtland, was killed in action by a roadside bomb on Dec. 2, 2010, while on active duty in Afghanistan. He was born Sept. 27, 1965, in Show Low, Ariz. When Jim was three, he and his family moved to Tucson, Ariz. There he graduated from Catalina High School and the University of Arizona. Jim was a Patrol Sergeant with the Farmington Police Department, where he served for 14 years. He was awarded Supervisor of the Year in 2009. Jim is survived by his wife, Carlotta, daughter, Ashley and son, Thomas, all of Kirtland; his mother, Eve, and stepfather, Ron Taylor, of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; his father, Ernest Thode; sister, Mary Thode of Tucson; and grandmother, Olive Myers of Payson, Ariz. Jim was a beloved husband, father, brother and son. Those who served with Jim, and the community in which he lived, respected him for his integrity, work ethic and selflessness. He will be dearly missed. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the church where Jim and his family are members, Piñon Hills Community Church, 5101 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington. Pastor John Morgan will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Farmington. Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home
