Sgt. Major Michael J. Waldon, 59, of Farmington. passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. in Kirtland. He was born Oct. 1, 1951, in Bakersfield, Calif. He received a Bachelor's degree while serving in the U.S. Army. Michael continued his career in the military and retired in 1997 as a Sergeant Major. He worked at the Kirtland Consolidated Schools for the past five years where he joined the ROTC and was co-commander with Commander Sgt. Major Craig Frost. Previously, he worked at Clinton High School in Clinton, S.C., as a ROTC Commander for 10 years. Michael was a camper, fisherman, boater, hunter and all-around sportsman. He coached rifle teams for the past 15 years with his wife, Linda, and won the U.S. Junior Olympics two years. Michael had numerous national records. His present team is ranked 7th in the nation. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Alton Henry Waldon; and his brother, Danny Waldon. He is survived by his wife, Linda Waldon, of Farmington; children, April Potter, Michael Waldon Jr., and Michelle Waldon; mother, Arnell Waldon of Carlsbad; brothers, Richard, Gary and Randy Waldon; grandchildren, Michael Waldon III, and Arlee Potter. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 23, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, (505) 325-8688. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 473 CR 6100 in Kirtland.
