Cauchon, Sister Miriam

March 2, 1933 - October 11, 2016

Sister Miriam Cauchon passed away at the Felician Sisters Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Helen Marie was the daughter of Raymond and Irene (Berube) Cauchon. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Long Beach, California where she grew up and received her elementary and high school education. In 1953, Helen became a member of the Felician Sisters in Ponca City, Oklahoma and was named Miriam. Sister Miriam spent most of her life as a teacher beginning with grade 2 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the following years she taught in Pomona, Anaheim, Claremont, Long Beach and Arcadia, California and in Exeter, Tecumseh and Omaha, Nebraska. Sister served as librarian in Pomona Catholic Girls High School. She ministered as principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School in Pomona and St. Philip Neri in Midwest City. Sister took a break from teaching from 1981 to 1985 to minister at the generalate in Rome, Italy as librarian, clerical assistant and tutor of English. From 1991 to 1993 Sister Miriam again stepped out of the classroom to take care of her aging and ill mother. In 2008, sister retired from teaching and moved to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent in Rio Rancho, New Mexico where she once again served as librarian. Throughout her sixty-three years Sister Miriam performed many additional ministries, the most cherished of which was Eucharistic Minister. A prayerful person she treasured the times she was able to bring Christ to others in this manner. She also brought Christ to others through her many kindnesses, her faithful correspondence, her visits to homes and simply her smile. Sister will be missed and her memory treasured. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Paul Cauchon. She is survived by her nephew Rod Cauchon and her niece Michelle Van Wig who was at her bedside at her death. Wake and Rosary Services will be held at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Convent Chapel at 4210 Meadowlark Lane SE in Rio Rancho on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at 6:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the same location on Friday, October 14, at 9:30 AM followed by final committal and interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
