SPURGEON VERNON KELLEY May 20, 1919 - September 8, 2009 Lifelong 4 corners area resident Spurgeon Vernon Kelley passed away at his home in Aztec, NM on September 08, 2009. He was 90 years old. Mr. Kelley was born to Seagle and Augusta Kelley on their farm on the Florida Mesa (in what was then known as Falfa, Colorado a small farming community off Colorado Highway 172 in La Plata County) on May 20, 1919. In 1940 he married Hortense Shults of Felt, Idaho. The marriage ended in divorce after 28 years. In 1971 he married Edrice Sullivan of Aztec, New Mexico and moved to Aztec where he has lived ever since. Mr. Kelley was a dairy farmer and rancher at the farm his dad homesteaded in 1906 on the Florida Mesa. He loved and respected the outdoors always leaving it in better condition than how he found it. He also loved flying and was co-pilot for a friend for many years, logging many happy hours in the air. Mr. Kelley is survived by his wife Edrice Hixson Sullivan Kelley and his children Neal Kelley of Montrose, Colorado; Roger Kelley of Valley View, Texas; Shirley Chase of Moorpark, Calif; and Sharon Kelley (Graham) of Farmington, New Mexico; and his step-children Joan Cowan of Broad Run, Virginia; Celia Judkins of Green Valley, Arizona; Wallace Sullivan of Keene, Texas and Marie Taylor of Roswell, New Mexico; 9 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; many great-grand children and step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
