Dank, Steven
Steven Dank, age 60, passed away on October 24, 2014. He was born on March 16, 1954, in New York, NY, to Irving and Harriet Dank. Steve is survived by his mother Harriet, daughter Maya, brother Richard and his wife Paula, sister Ellen and her partner Larry, and numerous other family members, friends, and loved ones. He is preceded in death by his father Irving.
Steve grew up in a tight-knit Jewish family in New York City, who immigrated from Poland and Austria in the early 1900's. He was passionate about learning and graduated from dental school at Georgetown University. He was a dedicated dentist for many years, setting up clinics and establishing dental health programs as part of the Indian Health Service/Public Health Service. Steve's drive to expand his horizons brought him to the Southwest, where he found a sense of home and inspiration in the desert. He and Mary Zaremba brought Maya into the world in 1988 and raised her in New Mexico as well as a brief residence in Alaska. Since he was a child, Steve cared for numerous animals and plants, and later became a masterful landscaper. He helped to design and build a home in Corrales, where he lived until his passing. Steve was a talented photographer, multi-media artist, collector, craft expert, storyteller, and musician. He followed practices in Buddhist philosophy, yoga, and meditation. He was both a maker and thinker, spiritual and practical, serious and silly. One way in which all of these qualities came to life was in his love of traveling. He traveled to every continent on this planet except for Antarctica, taking photos and getting to know the cultures, particularly rural areas. He fostered connections with many wonderful friends, partners, and communities over the course of his life. Steve will be loved and missed by people all over the world.
Steve's family held a Graveside Service on November 6th at Beth Moses Cemetery, and sat Shiva at Richard and Paula's house November 6-9th, both in Long Island, New York.
Maya and other friends/family will also be putting together a memorial and showing of Steve's art here in Albuquerque, sometime in the Spring of 2015. Details will be posted on this website as they develop.
Thank you all for your condolences, support, resilience, and love.
