Susie Herrera

February 28, 1941 — November 23, 2017

Susie Herrera, passed into the Lord’s hands on Thursday, November 23, 2017. She was born in El Guique, New Mexico to Rosendo Martinez and Juanita Casados Martinez, on February 28, 1941.

She graduated from El Rito High School at the tender age of sixteen.  She married her high school sweetheart, the love of her life, Floyd Herrera Nov 29, 1958.

Susie was a multi-talented and highly motivated woman. She attended Cosmetology College and opened her own salon while caring for a newborn.  Later, while raising their two daughters she returned to college earning degrees in bilingual education, guidance/counseling and a master’s degree in mathematics. She was the epitome of a life-long learner and educator. She taught mathematics at all levels in the Albuquerque Public School System.

Reading, crafts, cooking, and keeping abreast of current events were among Susie’s hobbies. Susie was a terrific dancer and took advantage of every opportunity to display her talents with her partner Floyd. As a lover of the outdoors she enjoyed walking, gardening and attending her granddaughter’s sporting events.

Susie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her home was always welcoming to anyone who came to visit. Susie’s faith was the cornerstone of her strength and it never wavered even when she faced adversity. She dealt with health challenges in a way that only she could, with a courageous smile. The lessons learned from the time spent providing care to, and sharing moments with Susie will never be forgotten.

Susie is survived by her husband of 59 years Floyd; her daughter, JoLynn H Muraida and husband, Gerard; granddaughters Susan, Caroline, and Madeline; her daughter Maria Miller and husband Rod; her brother Ross Martinez and wife Martha. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Pete Herrera, his wife Patricia, brother-in– law Adan, his wife Nancy; her sister-in-law Elizabeth Gallegos and husband Marvin; and sister-in-laws Loretta Salazar and Carol Herrera; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
