Thelma Kowal (nee Verbeek), age 83 of Rio Rancho, NM, formerly of Lansing, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016. She is survived by her children: Joe (Helen) Kowal and Vicki (Ed Glottstein) Kowal; her brother, Clarence (Lois) Verbeek; her sister-in-law, Marjorie Verbeek; her brother-in-law, Bill Rogers; and her two granddogs, Toby and Dexter. Mrs. Kowal was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter J. Kowal; her brother, John Verbeek; her parents, John and Edith (nee Waslander) Verbeek; and her sister-in-law, Julie Rogers. Funeral services for Mrs. Kowal are currently pending. Friends are invited to visit with Mrs. Kowal's family on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 3:00 - 8:00 PM at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, IL. Mrs. Kowal will be laid to rest beside her husband in Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond. Mrs. Kowal was instrumental in beginning the Coffee Break Ministry, which was founded by her good friend, Liz Huizenga, in the Chicago land area and in Arizona. She enjoyed the arts, particularly oil painting. The past few years she would color every day and enjoyed cupcakes. Mrs. Kowal’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at The Rio at Cabezon in Rio Rancho, NM, the long-term care facility where she resided, for the love and care they showed their mom these past few years, as well as Casa de Rosa, Manzano Del Sol, and UNM Hospitals.
