Thomas J. Harbert

HARBERT - Thomas J., age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, November 8, 2009 after a long illness. He was born June 13, 1923, in Dilworth, Oklahoma, but raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by his beloved wife, Laverne of 64 years of marriage; sons Jim and wife Lisa, Bob and wife Vickie; and daughter Sue Harbert. Will be sadly missed by grandchildren Brad Harbert, Melissa Maestas, Kari Schuppenhauer and husband Rob, Steven Harbert and wife Christy and six great grandchildren, Skyler, Kyle, Kirsten, Dustin, Ryan and Allyson. Cremation has taken place. Tom enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1942. After receiving his wings in 1945, he became a flight instructor in World War II, and married his high school sweetheart, Laverne, and resided in St. Louis. Tom moved his family from St. Louis to Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1959 and was hired by the Los Alamos Laboratory as a mechanical engineer. In 1986, after 27 years at LANL, he retired and resided in Albuquerque until his death. Tom and Laverne were square dancers for many years in St. Louis and Los Alamos and enjoyed bowling in Los Alamos and Albuquerque for several years.
