Walter Stuart Smith, 55, passed from this life on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at San Juan Regional Hospital from severe head injuries that he had sustained from a fall off a ladder during icy conditions. He was born, January 7, 1956, in Farmington to John Edwin Smith and Carolyn Sedlmayr Smith. He went to Bloomfield schools graduating in 1974 from BHS. He joined the U.S. Air Force in the fall of ’74 and served until 1978. Upon returning home he went to work for the Bloomfield Police Dept. for two years, then to San Juan College and UNM. In 1983, he joined the San Juan Sheriffs office and proudly served the county until his retirement in 2004. Since his retirement he has been blessed to spend most of the last six years living life in the outdoors of the Land of Enchantment which he loved dearly, especially up at his ranch and with his beloved horses and meeting for lunch with his S.O. buddies almost every week. He was preceded in death by his father, John E. Smith; baby brother, Andrew Smith; nephew, Owen Metz; stepbrothers, Craig and Michael Reevs. He is survived by his mother, and beloved stepdad, Carolyn and Gordon Reevs; sisters, Kathy Smith and Vicky Weaver; brothers, David (Gidget) Smith and Bobby (Dianna) Smith and Ricky; stepbrothers, Richard, Gary, and Eric Reevs; aunts, Harriet Smith and Milly (Larry) Carl along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. San Juan Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard will be conducting Honor Guard services. Pallbearers are Tyson Tanner, Tommy Smith, Scott Smith, Alan Miller, Gary McDaniel, Dave Whitaker, Alan Jones, Kevin Kennedy, and Richard Miller.
