William Maurice Smith

William Maurice Smith (Morris), a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on January 27, 2025 at 1:27am, in Albuquerque, NM. Born on May 28, 1947, in Cedarvale, NM, William's life was marked by his dedication to both his family and his career.

For 37 years, William devoted himself to the telecommunications industry, serving with distinction at Mountain Bell, US West, Qwest, and Century Link before retiring in 2001. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident throughout his professional journey.

An alumni of Santa Fe High School, William carried the values he learned into every facet of his life. Those who knew him recall not only his professional achievements but also his passion for life and the interests that brought him joy. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing pool, water skiing, and camping. His adventurous spirit led him to explore the outdoors through hunting and ATV adventures, while his love for basketball kept him active and engaged.

From 2017 to 2023, William proudly participated in the Santa Fe Senior Olympics, embodying the competitive spirit and vigor he maintained throughout his later years. His dedication to sports reflected his zest for life and his unwavering determination.

William was married to Ruth Alleen Williams for 56 years. Together, they created a warm and loving home, nurturing their family and fostering connections that would last a lifetime. William is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth, as well as his children, Keith Smith of Albuquerque, NM, Rebecca Elmore of Albuquerque, NM, and sister Sharalyn Sue Otero of Las Cruces, NM. He was a proud grandfather to five granddaughters, Maggie and her husband, Vadim, Lillie, Sydney, Faye and Sarah and his daughter in law, Becka and son in, Charlie who brought him immense joy and fulfillment.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Norman Smith and Dorris Dean McCloud Smith, and his sister Lillian Smith who passed at the age of 2. The memories of his nurturing presence and enduring love will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

The family would like to thank all his wonderful friends in Santa Fe whom he played pool and golf with.

A memorial service in honor of William Maurice Smith will be held at City Church, located at 2801 Louisiana Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.  on February 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched many lives with his kindness and spirit.
